National Coming Out Day (celebrated annually on 11 October) is a time when some people decide to be open about their sexuality to their friends, family or the world.
Coming out and being a proud lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered or queer (LGBTQ+) person may take a lot of courage, but it can be liberating and even life-transforming.
First celebrated 33 years ago in 1988, the day raises awareness of how some members of the LGBTQ+ community are faced with navigating the delicate process of coming out. Many LGBTQ+ people find themselves having to come out over and over again by telling family, friends, co-workers and classmates that they identify as LGBTQ+.
At DMU, we are proud of the diversity of our staff and students. Our commitment to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index visibly demonstrates our inclusive and supportive environment, which aims to enable all staff and students to feel free to be their true selves at work and in their studies.
This video from a couple of years back features DMU's Diya and Amber sharing their coming out stories.
