Do you play a musical instrument? Looking to keep your skills sharp and meet new people? Importantly, are you a student aged 25 or under? Well, the Leicester Symphony Student Orchestra (LSSO) might just hit the right notes for you!

What’s the LSSO all about?

It’s a youth orchestra for players at Grade 6 level or above and open to musicians up to 25 years old.

It holds regular Saturday morning rehearsals at Beauchamp City Sixth Form College, Leicester LE1 6JL, from 10am–12.40pm.

The orchestra performs at events across Leicester and Leicestershire, including at the famous De Montfort Hall.

What kind of music do they play?

The LSSO offers a broad musical experience, including:

  • Classical favourites
  • Film scores
  • Pop music
  • World premieres (last year they performed a Grime Opera and the Space Scratch Symphony, an innovative mix of turntables, DJs, choir and orchestra).

The 2024-25 season includes a project that’ll be filmed and shown at Leicester’s Phoenix cinema.

Interested? Here’s what you need to know:

  • LSSO offers two free trial sessions to see if it’s right for you
  • Price: £100 for a 10-week term
  • Fee reductions available for eligible students on low incomes
  • Free spots for players with specific instruments the orchestra is short of.

Don’t let your instrument gather dust! The LSSO is a great way to keep playing and make new friends in Leicester.
