World Environment Day

As part of an online series of lectures, to mark National/World Awareness Days, we are pleased to celebrate World Environment Day with an event on Friday 4 June from 12.30-2pm. 

Chaired by Subhes Bhattacharyya, Professor and Director of the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development, this session will focus on the climate change challenge and the global mission of achieving net zero emissions. The session will include short talks followed by a Q&A with the audience. 

As a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, energy supply and use will have to undergo a major transformation. Dr Rupert Gammon will highlight the role of sustainable energies. 

Globally, cities account for more than half of the world’s population, consume over two-thirds of the world’s energy, and contribute around 70% of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Efforts of cities in the transition process will be presented by Dr Leticia Ozawa-Meida and Dr Birgit Painter. 

A transition to net zero depends heavily on efficient resource use and waste minimisation. Professor Raffaella Villa will present circular economy approaches, highlighting waste to energy solutions. 

Delivering net zero involves international, national and local drivers, organisations and legal/ regulatory arrangements. The governance dimension of delivering net zero will be presented by Dr Katharine Rietig.
