Leicester Donor Centre is calling for blood donations due to low fill rates. They are encouraging the Leicestershire public to donate in memory of Hayley Perks.
In 2018, at just 35 years old, Hayley was diagnosed with leukaemia and given ten weeks to live. After receiving 67 blood and platelet transfusions (which was a combination of 526 individual’s blood donations) Hayley’s life was prolonged by 32 weeks.
Sadly, 15, 000 lives are lost each year to various types of blood cancer, which requires 400 new donors each day to meet demand.
Blood donations are vital for routine care, and despite demand for blood returning to pre-pandemic levels, there is less space on sessions to collect blood now due to social distancing.
The Leicester Blood Donor Centre can be found in the city centre on Guildhall Lane, and is open both weekdays and weekends, with early morning and evening appointments available. It is easily accessible by public transport and within walking distance of the train station with free Wi-fi access and refreshments provided after donation.
You can find out more about the centre and its facilities here and view a 360 degree tour here.
