Mentor a young person and support their academic, social and future development

DMU students can apply to mentor a local young person through our partnership with the charity IntoUniversity and the University of Leicester. It’s an excellent opportunity for our students, particularly those who are interested in working with young people in the future.

IntoUniversity provides learning centres across England and Scotland. Each one offers an innovative programme that encourages young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods to achieve their aspirations – such as progressing to further and higher education, employment and work-based training.

What does the mentoring involve?

As a mentor, you are paired with a young person aged between 10-17 years. You will get to lead one-to-one sessions, supporting your mentee with academic skills, social and emotional development, and future thinking.

Mentoring meetings last for one hour and usually take the form of after-school/homework clubs. You will meet with your mentee every two weeks throughout the academic year.

How do I apply?

To apply, simply complete the short IntoUniversity application form* and select University Student Mentoring.

If selected to be a mentor, you’ll be matched with a centre in your area. The IntoUniversity Leicester North centre officially opened in March this year. It’s based at Barley Croft School Community Centre (in Beaumont Leys LE4 0UT), so you’ll need to be able to get yourself there for induction and mentoring sessions.

What happens next?

There will be a training and selection session to meet the team at the centre and to prepare you for working with young people (including in-depth safeguarding training).

As well as your regular mentoring meetings, you’ll also attend group events with other mentoring pairs and celebrate your achievements at the annual Mentoring Celebration.
