Hello everyone,
A very warm welcome back to campus. I hope you all had an enjoyable break and are feeling rested and ready for 2024.
I’m excited for the year ahead and hope that you’re looking forward to continuing your DMU (De Montfort University) journey. Whatever your goals are for 2024, we’re here to help you every step of the way with our range of support services. (You can help shape how we support you by taking part in our Undergraduate Student Survey and the National Student Survey – more details at the end of this blog).
In October, your new virtual learning environment, LearningZone, was launched. The new platform offers a more streamlined, easy-to-use system making it easier for you to find key information and learning materials for your course. It’s mobile-friendly, customisable and helps to keep you up-to-date and organised.
Additionally, every undergraduate and postgraduate student is assigned a personal tutor offering guidance and support. Specialist services, such as The Student Gateway and Student Advice Centres also help you to fulfil your academic potential and achieve personal development goals.
DMU was awarded a place in the top 20 best universities for work-based learning, thanks to the careers team and the Careers Hub that opened in March. The team is dedicated to empowering you to succeed in your future career and can help you with work experience opportunities and personalised careers support.
The DMU Global trips continue to give you the opportunity to apply your learning to experiences across the world. This award-winning programme offers unforgettable opportunities designed to broaden cultural horizons, equip you with skills valued by employers and empower you to become a global citizen.
But support at university isn’t just about your studies. Healthy DMU Hub has a wealth of online resources to help you maintain a fulfilling study/life balance. Trained support staff and resources can help with both your mental and physical health.
A recent government-backed assessment of higher education institutions, the Teaching Excellence Framework, concluded that at DMU, a “supportive and nurturing community of academics, students and expert advisers create an empowering learning environment which is successful in attracting a diverse student body.” The wellbeing support offered at DMU was credited as very high quality, with the Healthy DMU programme and personalised employability development tools among examples mentioned.
Your feedback is incredibly important to us and has a huge influence on shaping DMU and the services and support that we offer. We’re giving all our students the opportunity to give feedback on their experience, including teaching, personal support, resources and facilities. From Monday 15 January we will contact students in years one and two, inviting you to give feedback, and final year students will be contacted by IPSOS who run the National Student Survey. Please do respond so you can help to shape the future of higher education.
Whatever you want to achieve this year, DMU is here to help you reach your goals and I’m looking forward to seeing what you all do in 2024.
Happy new year,
