VC Student Blog: Careers support for DMU graduates

Hi everyone,

For some of you reading this, it will be the end of an era as you finish your studies at DMU and head on to your next adventure.

Whatever you are going on to do – whether it be a graduate job, taking a well-deserved gap year or further study, I wish you the very best and, remember, you will always be part of the DMU family through our alumni team at DMU for Life.

You may, of course, still be considering the many options open to you as a graduate and I would like to take some time to talk about how DMU can support you to gain experiences and opportunities whether you are in your first, second or third year.

We place great emphasis on employability at DMU and our Careers Team are here to help you find the opportunities right for you. They can support you with coaching and mentoring, advice on CVs and interview techniques as well as give details of funded internships which DMU pays for.

If you have not yet visited our Careers Hub, in the Hugh Aston Building, I would encourage you to do so. You’ll be able to meet our trained student peer mentors and practise presentation skills virtually using Bodyswaps VR technology. It’s been getting some great feedback and I’d love to hear what you think.

Virtual help is also available through My Career Builder, part of an online training programme which is available to students at any stage of your degree. You can watch videos, get CV feedback and book appointments to discuss any career questions you may have.

As a civic institution, one of the things we are keen to do is to encourage more graduates to remain in Leicester and Leicestershire after their degrees. Many students don’t realise the career opportunities there are in the city and we hope to show you that your career can be just as interesting in Leicester as it would be in London (as well as a lot cheaper!).

To this end, a new programme called Tomorrow’s Talent – in the Faculty Business and Law – is matching graduate job vacancies in local companies with new graduates looking for jobs.

From now until the beginning of September, the faculty’s careers team will match students signed up to the programme to roles being advertised. They are also offering one-to-ones to help develop CVs and interview skills. If you would like to know more, please email balcareers@dmu.ac.uk and the team will be in touch.

Our alumni are also very generous in supporting students, and there are many networking and career opportunities available through DMU for Life, including details of jobs fairs and expert advice.

Best wishes,
