Share codes

Share codes enable you to view and prove your immigration status online.

From August 2024, all Student visa holders should be able to access their e-visa once they have created a UKVI account. Students who applied from outside of the UK will need to firstly create their UKVI account and then set up their e-visa. Once you have done this, you will need to provide DMU with your share code as evidence of your Student visa.

 

  1. How do I access my UKVI account?

    You will have a UKVI account if you:

    • Have EU settled or pre-settled status
    • Applied for your current visa using the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app to scan your identity document on your phone

    You will need:

    • Details of the identity document you used when you applied (your passport, national identity card, or biometric residence permit (BRP)
    • Your date of birth
    • Access to the mobile number or email address you used when you applied - you’ll be sent a code to log in

    You will be able to view:

    • Your name
    • What immigration status you have (Student, EU Settled Status, Skilled Worker etc)
    • The expiry date of your status
    • What you are allowed to do in the UK, such as your Right to Study, work, and rent in the UK

    Below is an example of what you will see when you successfully log into the system.

  2. Prove my Right to Study – share code

    A share code is generated online for you to share with others, along with your date of birth, so that they can see your immigration status.

    If you have an eVisa rather than a physical visa or BRP, then you will be required to provide a share code to the university as evidence of your Right to Study in the UK.

    Firstly, you will need to log into the View and Prove my immigration status page.

    After you have logged in, you will need to click the green button on the page called 'Get a share code', as shown below.

    You will need your personal details including:

    • Details of the identity document you used when you applied (your passport, national identity card, or biometric residence card or permit)
    • Your date of birth
    • Access to the mobile number or email address you used when you applied - you’ll be sent a code to log in

    To request a share code to prove your Right to Study, you will need to select the third option which will state ‘something else’ as per the image below;

    You will then select 'Preview what the checker will see'. After this, you will need to scroll to the bottom and click 'Create a share code'.

    You will then see a share code. It is a random string of letters and numbers. You can see an example of a share code below:

    Once you have generated a share code, you can either:

    You must also provide your date of birth so that we can successfully view your online status.

    The share code can usually be viewed for up to 90 days. It should also state the expiry date on it.

    There is no limit on how many share codes you can request. You can request a new one before your share code expires if needed.

  3. What will De Montfort University do with my share code?

    The university will use your share code in order to check and verify your immigration status and your Right to Study. We will enter your share code into the following gov.uk website:
    Check someone's immigration status.

    Your immigration status will then be saved on your Student record as evidence. This is a UKVI requirement that the university has a copy of this saved.

  4. Updating your online immigration account details

    You must ensure your details are kept up to date. Otherwise, this is likely to cause issues if you are awaiting a decision from the UKVI, or when you try to enter the UK at Border Control for example.

    You can update your details online through the government website:
    Update your UK Visas and Immigration account details.

    If you don't have an online immigration status, then you must report any changes in your details in a different way. You can find out more at the following gov.uk page:
    Report a change of circumstances if you have a visa or BRP.

    You must update your online UKVI account if you've changed your:

    • Mobile phone number
    • Email address
    • Name
    • Identity document, such as your passport or national identity card
    • UK address
