On 11 July 1995 more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were massacred in and around the town of Srebrenica, during the Bosnian War. The UK has marked the event with a National Srebrenica Memorial Day for a number of years but following a United Nations (UN) resolution, this year marks the 1st International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica.
As a global hub for one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – SDG 16 to promote peace, justice and strong institutions – DMU is hosting an event to mark the anniversary of the genocide.
The theme for 2024’s commemorative events is ‘I am because you are’ and is a reminder that the common bonds we have as human beings are more important than that which divides us.
Assistant Professor in Community and Criminal Justice, Kim Sadique, said, "The 11 July marks the 29th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. DMU’s event to mark this day will remind everyone to stand together against genocide and for peace. We believe in building stronger communities and a more cohesive society for all.
“We are honoured to have Elvir Solak (classical guitarist) and Lejla Jusic (opera singer from the Sarajevo National Theatre) join us all the way from Bosnia. There will be music, poetry, an art exhibition and testimony.”
