An event to help breast cancer survivors restore self-confidence after challenging treatments is taking place in Harborough next weekend.
Drop In and Chat takes place at The Wellness Rooms, Tur Langton, on Saturday November 9 from 2pm to 4pm showcasing services from beauty and wellness treatments to specialised post-surgery bra fittings. The free event is being supported by organisations including Next, Glenfield Hospital’s oncology team and specialist lingerie companies.
It is being run by De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)’s Medical Forum, a research group which brings together oncology professionals, lingerie experts, designers and survivors to address challenges faced by the thousands of men and women diagnosed every year.
The event is free but people are being asked to register on Eventbrite using this link
Associate Professor Gillian Proctor, a survivor herself, said: “We want to provide support, self-care resources, and community connections for those who have gone through the challenges of breast cancer treatment.
“Our goal is to create an environment where survivors feel empowered to embrace life after treatment. I know myself how hard it can be.
“If you are concerned about your loss of identity and femininity, lacking in self-confidence, concerned about how you look and feel now then help is at hand. We aim to encourage you feel desirable again, share practical and available opportunities in your local area to encourage lifelong wellbeing and positive health, regain your confidence to develop a great positive mental attitude for your ‘new look future’.”
Research shows 44% of women diagnosed with breast cancer say it negatively impacts their body image. Some 25% say it harms their sense of identity while 33% say it impacts their self-esteem for the worse.
The DMU Medical Forum has developed a reputation for organizing initiatives that address health and wellness challenges. Through partnerships with healthcare providers and businesses, they provide accessible resources to help individuals regain their health, confidence, and independence.
