Education Academy

We are committed to teaching excellence at De Montfort University and aspire to provide sector-leading inclusive and engaging learning to enable our students to succeed.

Who are we?

The De Montfort University (DMU) Education Academy is DMU’s educational enhancement unit. The Academy offers an annual programme of academic and digital learning development for DMU’s learning and teaching and student support community underpinned by the Learning for Life pillar of the Empowering University strategy.

What do we do?

The Education Academy is made up of a team of learning and teaching experts who work in partnership with faculties and directorates to support the development of our academic community and serve as a catalyst for the enhancement of student learning.

“At De Montfort University, we strive for teaching excellence and the DMU Education Academy supports all student-facing colleagues in our collective efforts to deliver an outstanding student experience.” - Professor Roger Dalrymple PFHEA, Interim Head of the DMU Education Academy

Our offering across campus

The Education Academy offers DMU academic staff access to a wealth of resources, workshops, seminars and toolkits that have been designed to help staff to build on and enhance their teaching and engage with sector good practice.

Click on the dropdowns below to find out what our development offer includes.

  1. Digital Education at De Montfort University includes all aspects of using technology-enhanced learning to support teaching across all modalities. The digital development offer includes support for our partner institutions and across our international campuses.

  2. DMU’s Active Teaching and Learning Model offers an interactive resource for identifying and harnessing effective and exemplary teaching practices and is built on educational evidence that shows us how best to support student learning. By establishing a core set of teaching expectations through the model, we aim to provide clarity on what 'good' teaching looks like and ensure a more consistent, high-quality experience for all students.

  3. The DMU PRS provides the opportunity for those who teach in Higher Education to receive recognition for their role in supporting, teaching or leading effective learning experiences for students.

Accredited by Advance HE, our scheme supports colleagues to reflect on their practice and evidence the necessary descriptors of the Professional Standards Framework (PSF), allowing you to claim recognition as:

    • Associate Fellow (AFHEA)
    • Fellow (FHEA)
    • Senior Fellow (SFHEA)
    • Principal Fellow (PFHEA)

  4. The awarding gap in UK higher education refers to the disparity in student academic outcomes, particularly in the proportion of students who achieve higher degree classifications (such as first-class or upper second-class undergraduate degrees), between different student groups.

DMU has made it a strategic priority to eliminate the awarding gap, which is reflected in the Empowering University Strategy and the Learning for Life Implementation Plan. This is a sector wide issue and is not unique to DMU.

The Awarding gap resources help to support academic staff across the university to help address this awarding gap.

  5. Our DMU Teacher Fellows are members of staff who have demonstrated excellence in learning and teaching. They are at the heart of pedagogic innovation and practice. Colleagues who achieve this prestigious award develop their educational practice and support others across the university to enhance the student experience and outcomes.

In 2018, 2022 and 2023, teams from DMU were also successful in the Advance HE Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE). Our winning projects were CrashEd, Embedding Mental Wellbeing, and Decolonising DMU.
