Academic support

As a university student the way in which you study can be very different to school or further education. At DMU we have dedicated resources to ensure that you are supported during your transition and throughout your whole journey.

Common areas that our students ask for help with includes:

  • Essay writing (style, structure and referencing)
  • General written English (grammar, punctuation)
  • Research (skills and sources)
  • Time management
  • Verbal presentations
  • Revision and exams

Just Ask

Administered by Library and Learning Services the ‘Just Ask’ service provides help and information via email and telephone. There is a dedicated librarian for each subject area and a Library Disability Team, for specialist help.

Each library has enquiry points and expert staff-run drop-in sessions, workshops and one-to-one sessions to help you learn how to use library and learning resources.

Dedicated support for you

In addition to support on your course, the library provides advice, guidance and resources on many study skills including:

  • Approaches to academic writing
  • Literature searching and reference management
  • Strategies for managing research
  • Mathematical skills for non-maths students
  • IT skills to support your study

Centre for Learning and Study Support (CLaSS)

Based in Kimberlin Library the CLaSS service is here to provide help and support to students during their studies. Examples of common issues that students use the service for includes:

  • Learning about simple strategies to help plan that first assignment
  • Discovering practical approaches to critical analysis in your academic writing
  • Providing guidance and support for your final year dissertation

Support is delivered in a number of ways so students can find the approach that suits them best. There are online publications, study support tutorials, writing development advice and a number of workshops covering writing advice, study skills, how to look after yourself and starting your dissertation.

Maths Learning Centre (MLC)

Students also have access to the Maths Learning Centre (MLC), currently located in room 2.10 in the Kimberlin Library.

These drop in sessions are open to any DMU student during teaching and examination weeks 12.30 to 14.30, Monday to Friday during term and exam times.
