Teaching and assessment

Course modules

The course is comprised of two taught modules.

History, Diversity, and Ethics in Cricket

This module will introduce students to the contemporary landscape in cricket, with an emphasis on diversity and ethics. It will use historical and contemporary approaches and will, while teaching students about structures, governance, and management, encourage critical thinking on political, social, and cultural lines. On-going crises in cricket at the international and national levels, ranging from doping and match-fixing to alleged corruption in governing bodies, mean that no individual within cricket can ignore the issue of ethics. The module will address the historical development of cricket before moving into critical contemporary analysis of the sport. By exploring a variety of issues in a critical academic way, informed by historical and contemporary perspectives, students will develop a clear sense of the challenges facing cricket today and an agenda for maintaining excellence and reforming problematic areas.

Assessment is through a strategy proposal and an essay.

Cricket Development

Sports development is a major factor featuring in many sports professionals’ careers. It is the process by which each sport establishes a strategic pathway from grassroots participation to elite performance and is the strategy through which sport continually grows. As well as relating to the development of sport, the concept also relates to development through sport, which gives it a clear focus on improving individuals’ lives providing community and societal benefits. This module will introduce students to the key principles of sports development, with a focus on the specific needs of cricket. After a critical introduction to the history of sports development and its key influences, the module will explore the ways in which cricket – at national and local levels – can engage with these concepts. These will include increasing participation in cricket; minimising barriers to participation on lines of gender, ethnicity, faith, age, disability, and locality; and the role of coaching and support in helping individuals develop along the Sports Development Continuum from participation up to excellence. The module will have a strong focus on the grassroots cricketing community and will cover the cricket development partnership ecosystem of clubs, coaches, schools, health providers, local authorities, NGBs, facilities and venues, and policymakers. It will also consider the role of effective communications in a successful cricket development programme.

Assessment is through the creation of a development plan.
