Research in the School of Computing and Informatics
Research in the School of Computing and Informatics is well respected both nationally and internationally. The school ranked third among modern UK universities for research power in REF2014 and was rated 201-300 in the 2019 Shanghai Index – the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
With three distinct research institutes: the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility; the Cyber Technology Institute and the Institute of Artificial Intelligence, our research covers a wide range of areas from fuzzy logic to smart systems.
The Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR) has gained an impressive reputation as a key player in the international research network for the ethical and social implications of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
The Cyber Technology Institute (CTI), recognised as an NCSC Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR), focuses on the development of knowledge and technologies to ensure a smart, safe and secure cyberspace. This includes work on cyber security, smart systems, IoT, automotive systems, safety, software engineering and formal methods.
The Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IAI) has a strong track record in AI related research, especially computational intelligence and its applications to transportation as well as working on smart solutions and intelligent techniques to improve and enhance manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, media, energy, water and the environment.
Recent significant projects in the school, funded by national and international funding agencies, include:
