What you will study

Block 1: International Business and Strategy

This module tackles two fundamental questions in management: why and how do firms go international, and what determines their success or failure in global markets? In the first part, you’ll explore key theories, such as monopolistic advantage, internationalisation, and OLI, to understand the motivations behind a firm’s decision to go international, including entry modes and location choices. The OLI framework is made up of three components: ownership advantage, location advantage, and internationalization advantage.

The second part examines strategy, focusing on the resource-based and industry-based views to analyse how firms design and implement strategies for success in competitive international environments.

The final part integrates international business and strategic management perspectives, allowing you to apply these theories to real-world decisions, such as joint ventures and foreign investments. Throughout the module, you’ll gain a accurate understanding of strategic management in international contexts, preparing you to develop effective leadership and make informed decisions in today’s dynamic global business landscape.

Block 2: Strategic and Financial Decision Making

This module provides an in-depth exploration of Strategic and Financial Decision Making, equipping you with the essential tools to drive organisational success. You’ll learn to craft effective business strategies, conduct competitive analysis, and develop strategic plans that align resources with long-term goals. Financial decision-making topics include financial statement analysis, capital budgeting for investments, cost of capital, and risk management, preparing you to evaluate projects and manage resources responsibly.

You’ll also gain a strong foundation in corporate governance and ethics, ensuring that your strategic decisions promote responsible and sustainable practices. Core skills covered include interpreting financial statements, applying the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), structuring optimal capital frameworks, and understanding governance mechanisms.

Through case studies and practical applications, this module empowers you to make informed, strategic decisions in diverse business contexts, providing you with critical analytical skills essential for navigating today’s competitive landscape.

Block 3: The Principles and Practice of Sustainability in Business

Aligned with the university’s dedication to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), this module tackles urgent global challenges—such as climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality—within an organisational and leadership framework. You’ll gain interdisciplinary skills to develop sustainable solutions, covering economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability. Topics include sustainability principles, ethics, social responsibility, and the roots of sustainability debates.

The module emphasises practical application, focusing on the triple bottom line approach. You’ll learn to make sustainable decisions, manage sustainability efforts, and apply essential tools like life cycle analysis, sustainability reporting, and carbon foot printing. Hands-on projects and real-world case studies ensure you acquire actionable skills, preparing you for careers in sustainability consulting, enterprise management, policy analysis, and advocacy.

Through an innovative block study structure, this module allows concentrated, in-depth exploration of sustainability topics, equipping you to implement sustainable strategies and make a positive impact in diverse industries.

Block 4: Sustainable Human Resource Management in the Contemporary and Global Context

The Contemporary and Global Human Resource Management (HRM) module provides an in-depth look at core HRM practices, enabling you to understand the influence of global and environmental factors on HR strategies and organisational effectiveness. You'll explore critical issues in HRM, such as ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), emotional labour, employee wellbeing, and the psychological contract, and learn how to apply this knowledge to develop effective HR policies.

With a focus on international HRM, the module examines how multinational companies manage diverse, geographically dispersed workforces. You'll engage with various HR approaches, including ethnocentric, polycentric, regional, and geocentric models, and evaluate the roles of parent, host, and in-country partners.

Through real-world case studies, you’ll gain practical insights into managing people globally and sustainably. By the end, you’ll be equipped with skills in evidence-based decision-making, ethical practices, and strategic HR management, preparing you to drive positive change in organisations worldwide.

Block 5: Corporate Sustainability and Business Ethics

This module explores Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a complex, multi-dimensional concept that shapes how businesses interact with society. You’ll engage with academic perspectives on CSR, examining its ethical, social, and environmental responsibilities and the broader expectations that firms face today. Through case studies and real-world examples, you’ll learn how CSR theory translates into managerial practices and strategic decision-making within specific firms and industries.

Core topics include the ethical responsibilities of corporations, their role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the application of CSR in non-market strategies. You’ll gain critical insights into how corporations address social, economic, and environmental impacts and explore the different aspects of socially responsible behaviour.

By the end of the module, you’ll be able to assess corporate actions critically, articulate CSR’s impact on management, and reflect on how your values shape your decision-making within a business context.

Block 6: Business Project

This module offers you the choice of a project based on either a live company or a simulated business scenario (subject to availability). In this practical experience, you’ll apply the theoretical knowledge and workplace skills you’ve developed throughout your studies to real-world business challenges. Through initial seminars, you’ll gain the skills, methods, and guidance essential for successfully executing the project.

Working as a consultant, you’ll create and test recommendations in either a simulated or live environment, adjusting strategies based on their real-time impact. Projects often focus on innovation, such as improving business processes, models, or services, or developing entirely new ones.

By the end of the module, you’ll have a strong foundation in research, analysis, and decision-making under uncertain conditions, and will be able to justify strategic recommendations. This experience will enhance your independence, collaborative abilities, and self-management skills - essential qualities for today’s business environment.

Block 1, 3 or 6: Carbon Literacy Training

This module provides you with 8 hours of engaging training to become carbon literate, empowering you with the knowledge and motivation to reduce carbon emissions on personal, community, and organisational levels. Carbon literacy involves understanding the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and learning actionable strategies to reduce these emissions.

Throughout the module, you’ll cover essential topics such as climate science, calculating your carbon footprint, climate justice, and effective communication about sustainability. You’ll also explore the benefits of carbon literacy accreditation, a valuable asset for graduate employability in today’s environmentally conscious job market. The module features interactive, enjoyable activities, including quizzes and group discussions, to solidify your understanding and foster meaningful engagement with climate issues.

Learning outcomes include demonstrating awareness of carbon impacts and explaining your motivation and capability to reduce emissions. Both are assessed through a written report, or “pledge,” that captures your commitment to sustainable practices and your understanding of carbon reduction strategies.
