Our academic staff have extensive industry experience, allowing them to bring real-world insights into the classroom, and possess strong research backgrounds that contribute to advancements in their respective fields. Our lecturers continuously improve and innovate our curriculum and teaching methods to respond to the industry needs and student's feedback.
As a student, you will belong to one of the four schools within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, depending on the course you study with us. School of Applied Social Sciences
The School of Applied Social Sciences has over 100 academic staff, many of whom are engaged in impactful research and have links nationally with employers of social science graduates. This ensures you will have opportunities to learn from globally-recognised staff who are not only experts in their subject but who understand the needs of employers in the education, psychology, social work and criminal justice sectors. Your teaching will be underpinned by exciting and important research carried out by your lecturers in key areas of human experience such as reproductive health, climate change, domestic violence, cancer, and healthy eating in children.
Leicester School of Pharmacy
The staff at the Leicester School of Pharmacy come from a range of backgrounds and are experts in many different areas. Many are also published authors. Our experts include those responsible for the global phenomenon that is ‘A Germ’s journey’, and were heavily involved in vital work during the pandemic. We have experts with international recognition in pharmacy practice, pharmaceutics and pharmacology, as well as those with have vital links with the NHS and international companies. The School of Pharmacy also includes forensic science and we are leaders in safer knife research which has been implemented by a number of violence reduction units nationally.
Leicester School of Allied Health Sciences
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is a vibrant faculty with a broad spectrum of programmes. We are immensely proud of achieving the Bronze Athena Swan Charter Mark in 2023, which recognises good practices in the advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success.
The majority of staff are research active, whilst some specialise in their subject and professional practice, all ensure they have the latest research informing their teaching. A high percentage of staff have Fellow or Senior Fellowship of the HEA and we have Teaching Fellows in the school. A significant proportion of staff are from BAME backgrounds, mirroring our student body and local community. Research in the school ranges from laboratory-based, professional practice, social sciences and global health.
Leicester School of Nursing and Midwifery
Academics within the School of Nursing and Midwifery have a variety of research interests and are involved in an array of exciting projects. Highlights include the ‘Facilitators and barriers to early diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma (FILMM)’ study led by Dr Osaretin Oviasu; the Talent 25 project led by Professor Bertha Ochieng which explores the impact of participation in creative activities from childhood; and Ally Ackbarally who has written a book on ‘Human Factors for Healthcare’. Dr Kathryn Hinsliff-Smith is collaborating with colleagues in Brazil to develop research on older people in care homes. I have also just published research on professional football and mental health.
