Surgical First Assistant Extended Role Masterclass

Overview

A one day course to introduce current Surgical First Assistants (SFA’s) to the new extended role skills as set out in the 2018 Perioperative Care Collaborative.

9am-5pm covering Local Anaesthetic injection and pharmacology and surgical superficial suturing including drain stitching. Taught by practicing SCP’s, Consultant Surgeons and PA(A)’s. 

Course objectives

To give current SFA candidates an update, which will allow them to (once deemed competent by a designated Consultant Surgeon) practice the extended role of an SFA.

Who the course is for

Registered Practitioners with either a HCPC or NMC registration, a recognised SFA qualification, and support from their line manager and Consultant Surgeon Mentor.

Recommended prior knowledge

NMC/HCPC Registration and SFA qualification.

Key learning outcomes

  • To understand and be able to calculate maximum toxic doses of local anaesthetics
  • To be able  to describe and label the anatomy of the skin and sub cutaneous tissues
  • To be able to describe and evaluate the correct suture for wound closure and perform correct suture technique and knot
  • To be able to describe the indications and contraindications for drains and drain sutures

What you will achieve

  • A knowledge of superficial suturing and local anaesthetic administration
  • A knowledge of drain sutures and correct technique
  • An understanding of correct wound injection technique
  • An understanding of suture types and indications for specific sutures and suturing technique

This one day course will be delivered as a Masterclass with face-to-face learning from Consultant Surgeons and Surgical Care Practitioners.
