De Montfort University (DMU) alumna Sarah Higgins is no stranger to overcoming difficulties in life and she aims to share her leadership philosophy, based on the principles of emotional intelligence, in a new book ‘The Power of Love Leadership.’

Sarah is a Leicestershire native, born in Narborough and graduated from DMU in 1996 after completing a 4-year degree in BA (Hons) Business Studies.  She has since gone on to lead a successful career in Human Resources, Executive Coaching and Leadership Development.

Beginning her career with a graduate HR role at Astra Zeneca, she eventually worked her way up to the position of HR Director.  After being made redundant in 2007 she decided to establish her own business teaching people leadership skills for personal and professional development.

With 25 years of experience both in working within large corporations and as a freelance consultant, Sarah created the Power of Love Leadership model to help leaders understand how certain emotions limit potential and how leading with more compassion and humility helps to build resilience, greater success and sustainable results.

She admits that her recent decision to publish a book on her philosophy of leadership was unexpected: “Writing a book has never been something I thought I would do; I initially developed my model to help leaders - my clients - in a visual way to help them to talk about their emotions; to talk about the challenges they were having, and to think about strategies they could use.  However, after seeing so much success working with people, it seemed the logical next step was to find a way to share those ideas more widely.

“Business – and, in fact, life – is all about relationships. It’s about trust. It’s about what motivates us and what we believe in. And this is all based on how we feel.

“The biggest thing about emotional intelligence, is how it affects work and how you as a leader affect everything around you including your people. You set the tone for the culture of a workplace, so it’s vital to make the most of that.”
