Study Abroad

The Whole World in Your Hands!

Study abroad with Business and Law

The Faculty of Business and Law has carefully developed partnership agreements with many other universities worldwide and we actively encourage our students to be part of the Study Abroad programme. Study abroad programs are available to most full-time students at DMU

The Faculty’s Study Abroad programme is two-fold.  For students who wish to travel to Europe and the European Economic Area, the faculty is an active and energetic member of the European Union’s Erasmus programme.

For those adventurous students who want to travel further afield, we have many partner institutions as far afield as Australia, the USA and even China.

The faculty understands that many students are not confident to travel overseas to universities where they will be taught in the local language and we have tried to ensure that all of our partners will teach in English—but that does not stop you trying to learn the local language whilst you are on study placement!

As with any decision to undertake study abroad, it is important to think carefully about what your options are, where you would like to study and how you are going to fund it.

The most popular countries for both undergraduate and postgraduate study are in Europe and other English speaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand or the US.

The European Union and English-speaking countries have qualifications that are broadly similar to the UK and are particularly popular, often as a springboard into management roles in internationally focused organisations.

Most postgraduate study and research opportunities abroad occur in higher education institutions, but it is possible, in some countries, to carry out research in government departments.

If you don’t want to commit yourself to a long period abroad it might be possible to spend part of your degree in another institution outside of the UK, as a short term collaboration.

How much does it cost?

EU students studying on an Erasmus placement usually receive a grant from the European Union that covers the cost of their studies plus they will also receive a living allowance grant per month.

This means that your University tuition fees for the year that you study on an Erasmus placement are waived; if you study for a shorter period than a year, then fees may be payable.

The living allowance grant is currently around €300 per calendar month on an Erasmus study placement, some countries receive an additional ‘bonus’ living allowance grant and you may even be entitled to assistance with your travel costs to your host institution.

Students seeking a study abroad period outside the Erasmus scheme (i.e. outside Europe and the EEA) may have to pay for their tuition and living costs, but assistance might be available depending on country and institution selected.
