Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice

The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice which has been aligned to the Academic Professional Apprenticeship (PGCAP APA) is a professional development programme designed for new lecturers at De Montfort University to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes of a successful and confident twenty-first century academic.

To participate in the programme, you must:

  • be a permanent member of staff at DMU and be able to offer evidence of at least 100 hours Higher Education teaching in the academic year in which you commence the programme
  • provide evidence of your teaching hours and the approval of your Line Manager as part of your application.

Further entry requirements apply to the Academic Professional Apprenticeship (APA). HR and the Programme Team will determine eligibility for the APA during the enrolment process.

This programme encourages a scholarly, reflective and critical approach to learning, teaching, assessment and research and its emphasis is on teaching and supporting learning in Higher Education.

It is a two-year part-time programme and comprise 4 modules:

EDUC5026 Developing Your Higher Education Teaching 30 credits Core
EDUC5027 Advancing Your Academic Practice 15 credits Core
EDUC5028 Academic Innovation 15 credits Optional
EDUC5029 Developing Your Research Practice 15 credits Optional

Advance HE: Through its alignment with the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education (UKPSF) and accreditation by Advance HE, the PGCAP allows successful completers to gain professional recognition as Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. In addition, the programme is aligned to the level 7 Academic Professional Apprenticeship (APA) Standard, and eligible participants will be registered as Professional Apprentices for the purposes of the programme.  

Those who enrol through the Apprenticeship route, will receive the additional award; Academic Professional (Apprenticeship level 7).

The programme is offered at two separate points during the calendar year, with intakes in September and January.
