DMU secures over £0.5 million funding from the Turing Scheme to support students with international opportunities

DMU has been awarded a £525,000 fund by the Department of Education’s Turing Scheme. The scheme provides funding for students to take part in education and training across the world.

This is the fourth consecutive year the university’s DMU Global team has secured Turing Scheme funding, and 2024 marks a 65% increase in the amount given to support students.

Funding from the Turing scheme will support up to 180 DMU students to take part in overseas opportunities including spending a full academic year in Europe, North America, South Korea or Japan, year-long placements overseas, and four-week volunteering opportunities in Thailand, Tanzania, and Indonesia that contribute to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

Additional funding has been secured to support students from underrepresented backgrounds with increased awards to help with the cost of flights, visas, and passports.

Turing Scheme funding has allowed DMU Students to take part in global opportunities since the scheme first launched in 2021.

For DMU student Vimbainashe Nahmo, the Turing Scheme funding from DMU enabled a year of study abroad in Sophia University, Tokyo. The funding allowed Vimbainashe to enhance academic study with travel and course materials. The opportunity also allowed Vimbainashe to visit cultural sites in Japan and take part in local activities.

“I am grateful for DMU for offering the Turing Scheme funding that aided in my learning. This made the year abroad more fulfilling and less stressful.”

Daria Pieczynska used Turing Scheme funding to study abroad for a year at California State University, Chico. During this time, she was able to experience a different way of life on the west coast of the US.

“I managed to visit five American National Parks and some of the biggest cities. I think my favourite place was Yosemite National Park, I thought it was amazing!”Daria Turing scheme

Across the university, students like Vimbainashe and Daria have been able to enhance their student experience by taking part in DMU Global events.

Leo Smith, Head of Global Mobility at DMU said:

“I am delighted that DMU has secured Turing Scheme funding for the fourth year in a row, allowing us to develop and grow the international opportunities that we offer our students. Increasing the funding we receive by 65% from the previous year is testament to the hard work and ambition of the DMU Global team, and we are excited to work with our partners and friends globally to put our ambitious plans into action”
