DMU welcomes UK Government statement saying it values the contribution made by international students

The Secretary of State for Education has said the Government continues to support and value the contribution that international students make to the UK.

In a short video released by the Department for Education, Bridget Phillipson says that international students should feel welcome to come and study in the UK.

The Secretary of State adds: “I want students to come from around the world and build bonds with their classmates here in the UK – because friendships between students become friendships between countries.

“That’s what education is all about. Not just a force for good in people’s lives, but a force for good in our world.

“So come and join us – and see for yourself!”

Ms Phillipson says she has spent her first month in office “resetting relationships across the length and breadth of education – including with international students”.

She continues: “My passion is for a Britain that looks outwards in optimism.

“A Britain that builds bridges of friendship with other nations.

“A Britain that values the contribution of international students.”

The message has been welcomed by De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

DMU Pro Vice-Chancellor International Simon Bradbury said: “This positive message from Bridget Phillipson will certainly help building bridges with international students and let them know they are welcome, they are valued and their importance to the UK economy and our relationship with the rest of the world must not be underestimated or taken for granted.”
