Unforgettable overseas experiences on offer for more students with DMU Global

Students are being offered incredible opportunities to travel and study in some of the world’s great cities through the University’s DMU Global scheme.

Being inspired by interior design in Venice, looking into international law in The Hague, focussing on film studies in Berlin and learning about mental health in Paris are among the trips which have been organised by academics across the De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) faculties.

There are a further five trips available as extracurricular activities including learning about Spanish culture in Alicante and the history of colonialism in Amsterdam.

DMU Global is the award-winning international experience programme for DMU students. The unforgettable opportunities on offer are designed to broaden cultural horizons, equip students with skills valued by employers and empower them to become a global citizen.

Funding to help students on their trip include a bursary of £150 for any experience within Europe and £400 for trips outside of Europe, which, in this latest round of experiences, includes locations such as Florida, Dubai and Victoria in Canada.

In order to widen participation in DMU Global trips there are additional bursaries of £200 available for eligible students, such as those from low-income backgrounds or those who have a disability or medical condition.

Five lucky students will also win a free DMU Global trip. Anyone who books to go on a trip taking place between 1 January and 28 April 2024 will be automatically entered into a prize draw.

Applications are now open and students have until Monday 23 October to apply

Charley Clarke, a DMU Biomedical Science student, travelled to Dubai earlier this year to look at the advancements in the treatment of diabetes. She said: “This was an amazing opportunity to put into practice what I had learned at university

“So, all of the laboratory techniques I learned at university I got to see actually being done in a hospital environment which was really exciting.

“I also got to learn about the big differences in the healthcare systems in Dubai compared to the UK.

“I had never travelled abroad before and never been on a plane so there was a real fear there. But since doing it, it is not as scary as I thought so it has really opened the doors for me for future travels.

“I can 100 per cent say it’s a highlight of my time at DMU. It’s something every student should take part in. Even if you feel it is something out of your comfort zone it is worth pushing yourself. You definitely will not forget it.”

Julia Serafinska, a second year Psychology student, went on a Student Exchange Experience in Bilbao in 2022 and in March this year she went on a Spanish Culture and Intercultural Communication trip in Alicante.

When asked if students should apply for a DMU Global trip she said: “Yes, yes, and yes! It is affordable, because of the DMU Global bursary for each trip.

“It allows you to explore a new culture and see new amazing places. It always surprises me how brilliant the organisation and itinerary is.

“It broadens horizons and allows for personal, professional, and academic development through learning and experiencing something new and exciting.”  Information about all trips and details about how to apply can be found on the DMU Global page.
