Around 200 De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) students took advantage of free tickets to watch Leicester Tigers take on Harlequins at Tigers Stadium.
The giveaway is part of an ongoing partnership between DMU and the Premiership club and for many who went, it was the first time they had experienced top flight rugby action.
Lukáš Vaněček, 23, an Erasmus student at DMU studying Journalism and Film, from Charles University, Czech Republic, jumped at the opportunity to experience his first ever rugby match as well as a tour.
“This marked my inaugural encounter with the sport, and it is an event that will undoubtedly be etched in my memory for years to come,” said Lukas.
“I relished observing the electrifying atmosphere and enthusiasm radiating from the passionate fans. The significance of the occasion was heightened by its alignment with Remembrance Day, a cultural nuance that differs from how this day is observed in my home country.
“I am sincerely grateful to DMU for extending such opportunities to us students. The afternoon was truly exhilarating, combining the thrill of the game with a backstage perspective and insightful conversations.”
A second tour later on in the afternoon, which DMU staff attended, was provided by the Tigers allowing for the guests to get a behind the scenes look at the Welford Road stadium.
Three journalism students were also offered an exclusive look into how a top-level match is covered by press, with a tour including the media box hosted by Rian Murphy, Rugby Communications and Media Manager at the Tigers, as well as free tickets for the game.
Despite the Tigers losing 25 – 29 to Harlequins the result did not dampen excitement for the occasion.
First year BA Journalism student, Matthew Saunders, 18, said: “Before the game we were given a tour around the stadium and to see how the club ran on matchdays, it was a great experience to see behind-the-scenes especially on a matchday.”
“The game itself was a very enjoyable contest which I wasn't expecting given the league standings before the game,” said Matt.
“I was expecting a sweep for Harlequins but they both left it out on the pitch, and I have nothing but respect for both sides.
“Obviously I'm not happy to see the Tigers lose but there was good stuff there. It was some sloppy mistakes in the end that let Tigers down, but I think if they can fix that before Northampton then they can finally get a win under their belt.”
