DMU’s standing as one of the most popular places in the UK for international students has been strengthened after receiving two nominations for the prestigious PIEoneer global awards.
The 2023 awards - organised by PIE News which is a leading independent voice in the international education sector – have given nomination nods to DMU Global and DMU’s Deputy Director of International, Francis Glover.

It is another feather in the cap for DMU Global which was nominated for a PIEoneer award last year while also winning a Green Gown Award in 2022 for its sustainability work.
The PIEoneer awards have recognised DMU Global this year for its work with DMU Careers to support student employability and entrepreneurship through international experiences.
Meanwhile Francis’ work in the international office has seen him shortlisted for the Emerging Leader of the Year Award.

Fran said: “It’s an honour to be shortlisted in such a competitive category. The standard is really high so it is a real privilege to be considered alongside these people.
“The nomination wouldn’t have happened without the work that so many people around the world have put in to recruiting students into DMU.
“I genuinely believe we are one of the most effective international recruitment teams in the country.
“I see evidence of that while working with the team every day and it is echoed by HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency) who has placed DMU in the top 20 most popular UK universities for overseas students.”
Leo Smith, Head of Global Mobility at DMU, which oversees DMU Global, said: “We are delighted to be nominated for the second year in a row for a PIEoneer award.
“This year feels more special though as it recognises the cooperation between DMU Global and the Careers Team here at DMU.
"Over the past 12 months colleagues working across the different departments in Careers have supported our programme, designing and delivering so many innovative international employability experiences which have impacted our students positively.”
DMU Global and DMU Careers created six unique international opportunities last year for 75 students, with a focus on creating more employable global graduates.
These experiences saw DMU staff and students work with overseas alumni, partner institutions, DMU’s Dubai campus and a range of high-profile businesses and start-ups across the globe. Destinations for these opportunities that targeted international and home students included: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Lisbon, Ho Chi Minh City, Dubai and New York.
The project was inspired by DMU’s Empowering University strategy which supports learning for life and learning in global arenas.
The project also addressed the strategic objective of empowering students from diverse backgrounds and reducing the progression gap into highly skilled employment among minority students.
Feedback showed that 48% of participants were international students and 44% identified as coming from a minority background. Meanwhile, 100% of participants agreed that the experience helped them develop a range of transferable skills for future employment and 100% felt that they built new networks and overseas links.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony in London on Friday 22nd September
