Two senior officials from the United Nations (UN) will join students and staff to discuss how De Montfort University can accelerate efforts to meet the targets of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs).
Jayashri Wyatt, Chief of the UN’s Education Outreach Section and Carlos Islam, UN Public Information Officer, will visit DMU at the half-way point of the UN’s Agenda 2030, to discuss how efforts to meet the targets of the SDG framework against a backdrop of global challenges including post-Covid-19 recovery, the war in Ukraine and the impacts of climate change can be stepped up.

The announcement follows the launch of the SDG Impact Awards last week which aim to recognise outstanding work by students and staff towards one or more of the 17 SDGs in research, teaching and extra-curricular activity at the university.
The awards will be presented at a networking lunch on April 26, hosted by the United Nations Academic Impact Hub at DMU.
Ms Wyatt said: “Education is a fundamental human right—the foundation of a resilient, peaceful and sustainable world. As we reach this milestone year in our journey towards achieving Agenda 2030 it is imperative that we focus on joint solutions to overcome the complex and ever-changing crises of our world today so that we can build a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
The discussion is the latest in a series of activities connecting UN officials with student projects, research and teaching with the SDGs.as part of the university’s role as a UN Academic Impact Hub for Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) 16.

DMU is also consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) and a is UN Climate Observer for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The university-wide event on April 25th will be a great way to take stock and consider where we go next, from two senior officials who work at the heart of promoting the SDGs globally every day.”
This is an opportunity for staff and students to hear and share ideas for a better future with those tasked with promoting the global goals. The event will be followed by networking and light refreshments. This is open to all and bookings will close one hour prior to the start of the event.
