With De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) opening its Early Clearing hotline to help school and college students nervously waiting for their results, 20-year-old Law student Peace Nemedia explains why calling the hotline number was the best decision she ever made.
Here Peace, who is about to start her third year of study, explains how a DMU Clearing expert put her at ease, why her Law lecturers are incredible and why Leicester really is a city for students.
‘THE WOMAN IN CLEARING REALLY CARED AND PUT ME AT EASE’
I went to pick up my A-level results and thought ‘this is not good’. I had not done as well as I had hoped.
I knew the Clearing number for DMU as I remembered seeing the university adverts on TV.
DMU was the third university I called on the morning of results day and I can honestly say the woman who answered my call made me feel so much better. She was really caring and really put me at ease.
She gave me a lot of information about the course and a lot of information about the university.
I said I was sad not getting the grades I wanted and she told me it was understandable and okay to be upset then explained why DMU was a good place to study and why I would enjoy it here.
The woman was so nice to me and the process I went through was so quick. I got all the information I needed straight away.
When you are upset and unsure about what to do next and someone tells you they will email you in five minutes and that happens, it is so reassuring. I spoke to other universities and they said they would send me information and it didn’t arrive for a day or so. I went through everything I had been sent by DMU and, because of that woman and all of the information I received, I confirmed I was coming to Leicester.
‘I LOVE MY COURSE’
I really have loved the course.
Every lecturer I have had has put so much time and effort into teaching and a lot of time and effort into me. You would not think that was possible with 200 people in the class but they really care. It feels so nice to know that.
One of my lecturers contacted me on LinkedIn because they had seen something they thought I would find interesting and would help me with the course. It was so good of them. It means they think of you and are always thinking about how they can help you. And I have made some great friends on campus.
LEICESTER - A CITY FOR STUDENTS
I had never been to Leicester before but I absolutely love it. I love the ‘walkability’ of the city. The university is so near to the centre and the things it has to offer. Life here is really great.
I love the cinemas, I love the bowling, I love the shopping, I love the night life – everything is so close to campus. It is great that you finish a lecture and you say to yourself ‘you know what I really deserve a McDonalds’ and it is five minutes’ walk away.
What’s the best thing about the city? There are just so many things to do. I have not been bored once since moving here. I still find something new every day. There’s always something to discover.
‘MY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE GOING THROUGH CLEARING IS …’
“There is no getting away from it. Clearing can be a scary process, but it is okay to be nervous.
“Preparing now is not a bad thing to do. It is always good to be prepared. Then pick up the phone and give DMU a try.
“Once you call DMU and start speaking to someone be ready to listen carefully - and ask lots of questions. The people on the other end of the line are there to help you.
“I am so glad I chose DMU. Life is so good on and off campus.”
