Ghanaian Government Minister is guest speaker at DMU event to help Africa grow and prosper

A research ‘cluster’ at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) which is dedicated to launching a new era of growth and prosperity on the African continent will have a Ghanaian Government Minister as guest speaker at an event later this month.

 MINISTER main

Dr Ibrahim Muhammed Awal, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Arts

The African Entrepreneurship Cluster, based at DMU’s Leicester Castle Business School, works with a vast network of international scholars, industry and policy makers spanning more than 20 African countries.

It’s growing global reputation means it has been able to secure the services of Dr Ibrahim Muhammed Awal, Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Culture and Arts to speak at their next webinar.

Dr Awal’s ministry is tasked with diversifying and expanding Ghana’s tourism industry and promoting the countries heritage and culture to aid economic development. Around a million tourists visit Ghana every year and the tourism industry supports, directly and indirectly, around 500,000 jobs.

Dr Awal will speak on the theme of ‘African Diaspora Engagement and Investment Opportunities in Home Countries’.

He will be joined by Dr Frank Nyame-Asiamah, Senior Lecturer in Business Management at Leicester Castle Business School.

The conference will look at how the African diaspora is still a source of income for home nations, particularly in the way that people send money back to their homes to spend in the economy.

Dr Seun Kolade, Associate Professor/Reader in Entrepreneurship & International Development at DMU, says he is delighted to have such a prestigious guest speaking at the webinar, which takes place on Tuesday 29 June.

Dr Kolade said: “We are pleased to be hosting Dr Awal, one of the most vibrant technocrats on the continent.

“Before putting his ideas and skills to work as a government minister, Dr Awal established a strong profile that straddles academia and industry. Dr Awal holds a Doctorate Degree in Business Administration from the Swiss Business School, and he is the former Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group Limited, Ghana’s biggest media organization.

“Like us at the African Entrepreneurship Cluster, Dr Awal recognises the unique opportunities and possibilities that innovative entrepreneurship offers for the future of the continent. In this session, we will be focusing attention on the role and contribution of diaspora Africans towards African investment and the entrepreneurial landscape.

“This is an important conversation, against the backdrop of several reports showing that, for many African countries, the people who send money home from abroad often trump foreign direct investment and overseas development when it comes to sources of cash coming into the country.”

The African Entrepreneurship Cluster is a research cluster within the Centre for Enterprise and innovation (CEI) at DMU. The CEI aspires to become a leading centre of research excellence in the field of entrepreneurship and innovation.
