Konnie overcomes the 'end of the world' to graduate with a first

When Konnie Colton finally found out her A-level results, it was, for her, the ‘end of the world’.

But after joining De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) through Clearing, not only has she graduated with a first, she has decided to tackle a Masters.

The 22-year-old originally joined DMU in 2017 after facing a results day she didn’t expect and was left with no other option than to find her place on a Creative Writing course through Clearing.

Speaking of her experiences she said: “I was terrified, when my results hadn’t gone to plan, I thought it was the end of the world.

“But take me back and I would do it all again, I believe everything happens for a reason and that reason for me was because I was meant to find DMU, and I wouldn’t change that for the world.

“At the time I was full of worry and fear, but I didn’t need to be. I was looking around different universities seeing what they could offer me and DMU really gave me their time to explain the course and go through each module, which helped me make my decision.”

She continued: “I won’t lie, it was crazy, it was stressful but I am so glad that I went through it else I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“The course, the people, the campus everything is brilliant and I have had so much support. Before I arrived at DMU I had never even been before, I just had a feeling through the people I spoke to during Clearing I was heading to a good place.”

Konnie graduated in 2020 with top marks even during a global pandemic, before starting her first year on the MA Creative Writing course this year.

She said: “Thanks to all the support from DMU, I managed to graduate with a first-class honours degree during a worldwide pandemic.

“I always knew I wanted to do a Master’s degree and there was no way I was leaving DMU to study for it anywhere else, so here I am!

“I have just finished my first year, I am doing it part time so I can gain some work experience at the same time.  I feel comfortable at DMU, the tutors are all so supportive and I hope I am heading to great things.”

Konnie has plans to work in publishing after her Masters.

“Books are my passion, I love reading, I love writing and I want to stay in that circle, if I have learnt anything in the last few years, it really is everything happens for a reason and I believe the same will happen in my career too.”
