De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has been shortlisted for three awards at the 2018 THELMAs (Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards).

The International Strategy of the Year shortlist recognises the work of DMU Square Mile India, the university's pioneering international outreach programme that has improved the lives of hundreds of children and adults, given students incredible experiences and created new interest in the university that has increased overseas recruitment.

Deputy Head of Public Engagement Amy White said: “I’m really pleased to see that the vitally important work that DMU Square Mile India does has been recognised in such high-profile awards.

"The team works hard to transform the lives of some of the poorest communities in Gujarat and our students travel to India regularly to work with communities on projects that allow them to put their studies into practice.

“So far hundreds of DMU staff and students have been able to support around 120 children of the lowest caste living in a hostel on the site of the Gandhi Ashram and more than £45,000 has been raised through staff and students.”

The university’s finance team have also been recognised on the Outstanding Financial Performance shortlist, following a number of recruitment and retention initiatives and targets implemented across the university.

THE editor John Gill said: "The THELMAs are unique in shining a deserved spotlight on often unsung heroes from across the professional services and administration of our world-leading universities, and it’s an honour for Times Higher Education to organise this event celebrating their achievements.

“This year’s shortlist – once again featuring almost half of all UK institutions – shows that talent and dedication continue to abound, as well as a determination to find creative solutions to problems as and when they occur.”

Unlike other categories in the THELMAs, the DataPoints Merit Award doesn’t take submissions, and the shortlist is created by analysing data collected from UK universities as part of the World University Rankings.

The shortlist represents universities achieving high satisfaction ratings for the quality of and access to learning facilities, but with an added ‘value for money’ element to reward the most efficient institutions.

DMU has been recognised in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and is a global university, with students and staff from more than 130 countries in the world, a pioneering #DMUglobal programme and links across the world including the UN Together campaign and Square Mile India community work.

The THELMAs are the only national awards honouring the full range of professional services and administrational talent working in UK universities and there will be a total of 15 categories this year.

These are the tenth anniversary THELMAs and winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London on Thursday 21 June.
