US experience serves tennis player Thomas well in job market

Tennis player Thomas Judd netted himself the perfect experience as part of his Master’s course at Leicester Castle Business School (LCBS).

Thomas, 23, from Thurlaston near Leicester, did a Sports Management degree at Davis & Elkins College in Virginia, America, but chose to do a Business Management in Sport MSc at LCBS, part of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

Part of the course included a three-month consultancy with a soccer agency in America, researching how the company could grow its offer for international students wanting to play sports and study in the US. Each student can choose to complete an Executive Company Project (ECP) to solve a business problem or research markets for a company.

It was the perfect role for Thomas, who is aiming to land a job as a coach at an American university. Thomas, who was awarded a scholarship towards his studies, has been playing and coaching for years.

He said: “I feel my ECP has benefitted me in gaining more experiences with the many areas covered by sports agencies and given me more understanding of what I can expect as I approach the job market. Problem solving was an important aspect as it wasn’t all plain sailing and when faced with problems I dealt with them confidently.”

Thomas was full of praise for his experience at LCBS on the MSc, especially the discussions in lectures, the expansive nature of the course and extra-curricular activities such as visiting behind the scenes at Wimbledon.

He said: “Discussions with my professors within lectures and outside of lectures on various topics that have arisen during the year of the course, have all provided help in furthering my knowledge of management, sport and leadership fields that I can take with me and use this with the skills learned throughout my future career.”
