Study trips across Europe makes DMU "unforgettable" for African student

A Computing graduate said the international trips he took while studying with De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) have given him the confidence to take his skills to work in Africa.

Mwenya Musanshi grew up in Zambia but decided to study at DMU because of the flexibility of the course and the opportunities for overseas experiences.

And yesterday he was one of hundreds of students from the Faculty of Technology who graduated in three spectacular ceremonies which took place at The Venue @DMU.

The 22-year-old was joined by his parents James and Martha, who had flown in from Zambia for the occasion.

He said: “I have loved studying at DMU and this graduation ceremony was so good; they seem to get better every year.

“During my time at university I have been on two #DMUglobal trips, one to Furtwangen in Germany and the other to Italy.

“Both of these trips gave me the chance to see experts from the computing industry and gain real-world experience. It was also the first time I had travelled in Europe.”

Mwenya said his third year had been his favourite because DMU had paired him with the right supervisor.

He said: “They paid attention to the lecturer I had connected with and paired me with them, so it was very helpful during such a busy year.

“I want to go back to Zambia and use the skills I have learned here.”

The 27-year-old said she had been feeling nervous about the day for weeks.

She said: “I was really worried; I just kept thinking about how it would feel walking across that stage. But it was a fantastic moment.”

Anjum, who was joined by her family including mum Tahera and dad Rafik, said she was now in a position to look for her dream job as a web designer.

She said: “DMU has this local feel, a really nice atmosphere. And there is a great amount of flexibility in how I can approach studying on the course.

“For example, having the library open 24-hours a day every day makes things very easy for me.”

After the ceremony finished, hundreds of newly-named graduates celebrated with family and friends in the warm weather, enjoying food and drink around DMU’s Graduation Village, right next The Venue.

One of those was Matt Turnbull, an Information and Communication Technology graduate.

The 23-year-old said: “One of the most useful things was the year-long placement I did at Pepsi, in Reading.

“I learned a lot of industry standard stuff and they really let me get hands-on. It gives you a perspective you just can’t get theoretically and it makes you as an employment prospect that much more attractive.”
