Louisa Nicholson, who studies International Relations and Politics, spent 12 months working with Pfizer, the world's largest research-based pharmaceutical company.

Louisa said her course has taught her about different political theories of international relations and has enhanced a range of important skills such as data analysis, writes Kerri Stevenson.

While completing her work placement in the field of pharmaceuticals, Louisa worked on a range of different projects as part of one of Pfizer's regional brand marketing teams, which helped to develop her skills in leadership, project management and working as part of a team, as well as increasing her knowledge of how such a huge organisation operates.

Louisa also had the opportunity to travel during her placement, giving her real life insight into how international relations works.

She feels that studying both International Relations and Politics for her degree has helped to set her apart from other graduates as many of them come from a business background and she feels her course helps her stand out from the crowd.

Louisa said: "I would definitely recommend my course to any students interested in politics who are thinking of applying to DMU as it got me where I am now.

"In my opinion, the best thing about my course has been the quality of teaching, as the lecturers are always there to provide you with a wealth of knowledge about what you are studying.

"They help to point you in the right direction, and being able to see them during office hours for guidance is very helpful."

Louisa also believes the wide range of modules have helped prepare her for a career after graduation, saying: "The modules on my course go into a lot of depth; one of my modules focused on the politics of the European Union, which is very relevant. I have learnt to be more critical in my analysis. I feel that this helped to prepare me for a career after graduation."

Louisa is now in her third year after completing the placement between years two and three. She is now looking at options for further study at postgraduate level or working in a graduate-level marketing role.
