Description

The number of students in HE with a known disability is increasing (Hubble & Bolton, 2020. Support for Disabled Students in HE).

Support is provided for disabled students by higher education providers (HEPs) through reasonable adjustments, disability services and by the Government through Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs).

This online workshop explores how staff can work more confidently with students and colleagues with a disability. The workshop will also explore ableism and discussion about how to avoid it.

Workshops aims include:

  • Explore conditions that are legally defined as disabilities under the Equality Act 2010
  • Understand the differences between the social and medical model of disability and how this can inform your practice
  • Develop confidence in relation to language and terminology and to relate this to challenging stigma and encouraging student disclosure.
  • Awareness of support and signposting to support the disabled student journey, from transition to employment

This event is free to attend and open to all DMU staff.

Please contact the DMU Events Office on eventsoffice@dmu.ac.uk to book your place or if you have any  questions or special event requirements.
