Personal profile

I am a very experienced educator and higher education professional with significant number of years of senior academic leadership in four Universities and two countries. Globally connected to influential academic and professional networks that span disciplinary boundaries and seek the betterment of society through influential and productive graduates, research and enterprise outcomes. I am committed to the transformative effect of education and recognise the significance of providing access to disadvantaged groups, such as indigenous, low socio-economic and widening participation individuals. A contributor and acutely aware of national and global trends in higher education seeking to connect industry in the educational offering as well as appreciating the skills and competency-based agenda around apprenticeships, work integrated learning, among others.

I aspire to maximising the impact that higher education has on localities, regions, communities and countries, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Committed to continuous improvement and recognising the need for renewal and modernisation of curriculum offerings I have extensive experience in unit, curriculum and research reconfigurations. I believe in a student-centred approach that takes a holistic view of student needs through highly motivated colleagues across academic and professional services. I work with people to deliver outcomes.

I have extensive experience across a number of disciplines which provides me with a clear appreciation of the significant differences between them as well the (often unrealised) benefits of their overlaps and complementarity across teaching provision and increased student choice, inter and transdisciplinary research opportunities and engagement with industry. I believe that Universities should have a clear commitment to their local and regional futures as well as servicing national and global priorities and needs.

I am an accredited Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (I was accredited by the Institute for Learning and Teaching in 2003, which since merged into The Higher Education Academy - 25197).

I have been involved in learning and teaching since 1995. I have supported teaching as part of my Masters and PhD studies and over the years I have developed teaching material and being involved in assessment and feedback in four disciplines (Engineering, Management, Design and Architecture and Built Environment, Art and Design) as well as teaching and assessing Civil Engineering in other institutions. I have experience in developing and leading modules and programmes as well developing CPDs working closely with industry and professional institutions. For example:

  • I was the Programme director for the MSc Built Environment in Healthcare (until 2008), where I also developed and delivered the compulsory module of Built Environment for Healthcare with other colleagues. The MSc and module were developed with the participation of regional and national representatives of user communities such as the department of health, NHS, CABE, PCTs, etc.
  • Development of the modules on ‘project and process systems’ and ‘process management’ workbook for a number of masters courses (1998 - 2001).
  • External Lecturer for the Trafford Manufacturing Institute which was incorporated in the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), funded by the DTI. Lectures delivered on Requirements captures and concurrent engineering. The audience was mainly industry practitioners (1998-1999)
  • Occasional lecturer for UMIST for the department of Civil and Structural Engineering, Project Management Group (1998-1999).
  • Teaching the Masters distance learning ‘lean and agile systems’ module in 2004 and ‘process and project systems’ module in 2006.
  • Lectures for the MSc in Construction IT at Salford and the IGDS course (1998).
  • Lecturer on the final year of the BSc in Quality Management, on ‘Quality in Product Design and Development’ for the School of Management at Salford (1996-1998). I was responsible for developing the course material and delivering the lectures and tutorials, including setting exam questions and assignments, developing marking schemes and presenting final assessment marks to the exam board.
    • Developing an Integrated Project Process. Rethinking Construction Training Toolkit, Module sponsored by DTI, CIRIA, DBF, CBPP, Rethinking Construction. (Published by CIRIA) (2003)
  • Responsible for running a number of tutorials, laboratory sessions, and lectures for the MSc in Advanced Manufacturing, BEng in Manufacturing Management and BSc in Quality Management. I also ran tutorials on the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) as a means of establishing a knowledge base for designing work teams and managing the personal development of people. I have since used this knowledge in managing and organising research teams (1995-1998).

I have also been involved with two internally funded teaching related funded projects as outlined below:

  • RIF Faculty funding to examine technology transfer from research to postgraduate teaching and training. (£2K) (2003) Lead Investigator with Professor Ghassan Aouad and Dr. Dilanthi Amaratunga. This project resulted in a best practice framework for transferring state-of-the-art research knowledge into postgraduate teaching. 1 journal paper and 3 conference publications have been published.
  • RIF Funding £10K (2004). An extension of the previous RIF project on transferring research knowledge to undergraduate teaching.

As part of my Academic Leadership positions I have also been involved in a number of strategic and operational initiatives that I have initiated and/or led their implementation:

  • In 2007-8 I have led the implementation of a radical review of teaching which saw the reformulation of the UG provision around module credit size standardisation, minimum student numbers and quality levels, shift from long-thin to short-fat modules and sharing od modules across programmes
  • In 2008-10 I have formulated and led the transformation of PGT portfolio, which included the closure of 6 programmes and the shared module structure of programmes leading to higher efficiencies and a more cohesive portfolio.
  • In 2010-12 my School had the highest national student provision of PGT and PGR students in the Built Environment area.
  • In 2011, as HoS I have led the establishment of collaborative provision in Sri Lanka
  • In 2012 I have led the transformation of the workload system at Salford (which was then adopted across the whole University on emphasising the relationship between teaching and research and also to focus activity on outputs and outcomes rather than inputs.
  • In 2013 I have negotiated and helped establish a collaboration between SoBE, RICS and Amity University in India
  • In 2014 I have led the portfolio review of 6 subject areas and 18 UG programmes.
  • In 2014-15 I have formulated and led the development of a workload system to re-prioritise strategic priorities and allocate resources according to school and institutional priorities as well developing a proxy system for valuing academic activity
  • In August 2015 my school has achieved the highest (National Student Surey) NSS results for 9 years with one department averaging 95% and 2 programmes at 100% satisfaction. This came as a result of significant planning and implementation of broad and cohesive plans
  • Since 2014 we have established 20 articulation arrangements with international partners which are now coming to fruition
  • In 2016 I was leading a portfolio review for growth across my school taking a strategic future orientated view based on distinctiveness and differentiation
  • Constantly managing an effective and efficient dynamic portfolio of programmes across disciplinary areas
  • Since 2009 I have been involved in setting, managing and overseeing KPIs across all academic areas in teaching and learning and research and innovation.
  • Between 2009 and 2020 I have led large academic units with strong focus on pedagogy and student satisfaction as well as TEF outcomes.
  • I am leading the renewal of the teaching portfolio in the School’s of Engineering and Built Environment in Western Sydney University, including the establishment of 3 key programs in Advanced Manufacturing and industry 4.0, Sustainable Engineering and Materials Engineering, including double degrees at PG level
  • I am working in collaboration with three other Universities as part of the Multiversity Aerotropolis initiative to establish a new prototype program to incorporate TAFE (equivalent of Further education colleges in the UK) and Industry (through Work Integrated Learning) for new program development
  • Leading the establishment of a collaborative program in Engineering with UNSW (a Group of 8 University – equivalent to Russell Group Universities in the UK)
