Dr Nayia Kamenou

Nayia Kamenou completed a joint BA (Hons) in Political Science – Thomas Hunter Honors Program Degree at Hunter College, City University of New York (summa cum laude), an MSc in Human Rights at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and her Ph.D. in European Studies at King’s College London (viva examination passed without amendments to thesis required). Dr Kamenou was the recipient of the Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation from 2001 to 2010. She also received the King’s College Graduate School Studentship and Fee Waiver (2007 -2010). Prior to joining De Montfort University, Dr Kamenou completed a visiting research fellowship at the Centre for Hellenic Studies, King’s College London and worked as an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Social and Political Sciences, at the University of Cyprus. She also worked as an Associate Lecturer at European University Cyprus and at the University of Nicosia.

Dr Kamenou’s research is highly interdisciplinary and cuts across numerous social sciences fields. She conducts research and has published work on (i) the interrelations between nationhood, ethnic identities, gender and sexuality; (ii) the impact of Europeanization on LGBTIQ rights and LGBTIQ political mobilization; (iii) women’s participation in far-right parties and the formation of gendered political agency and identities; (iv) women’s role in peace-building processes; (v) representations of gender and sexual identities in cinema; (vi) and trans* law and policy formation and its impact on trans* activism. Her research draws on political science, Europeanization studies, sexuality studies, gender theory, social movements studies and queer theory. Using primarily qualitative methods, Dr Kamenou’s research seeks to develop theories of political agency and identity formation via challenging disciplinary boundaries. Her work is firmly committed to political and social concerns in a range of geographical contexts, and to the development of possible interventions for their resolution.

Dr Nayia Kamenou is affiliated with a number of national and transnational research centres and non-governmental organizations. These include Accept-LGBTI Cyprus, the Gender Advisory Team (GAT), and the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS). She is interested in and has led and participated in research projects that aim at the eradication of marginalizations based on gender, gender identity and sexuality.
