Personal profile

Julian is a freelance fine artist and illustrator from Nottingham: He studied for a degree in Fine Art at De Montfort University. Shortlisted for A&I "Artist of the Year" 2014. Artworks included in public collections including the R.C. Diocese of Southwark and the Vice-Chancellor’s collection at DMU. Returned to DMU to study for an MA in Creative Writing, passing with distinction, with a dissertation focused on illustrated children’s fiction. 

From one of the modules for the MA course grew the idea to combine a long-standing interest in the history of art with creative writing, as the inspiration for a PhD research project.

Turner and The Mad-Doctor (An Ungovernable Temper)

Abstract

Being thought mad. London society’s attitudes to mental health and its treatment at the turn of the nineteenth century, viewed through the life and experiences of J.M.W. Turner’s mother, Mary Turner and Dr Thomas Monro, the principle physician at Bethlem Hospital.
