Prices and contract lengths

The cost of university sourced accommodation will vary from hall to hall and will also depend on the type and style of your room, i.e. en suite, double or studio. Other things to bear in mind when selecting your accommodation is the contract length, when payments are due and what the rent includes, for example, internet or contents insurance, as these factors will all influence your living expenses.

Prices for the 2013/2014 academic year range from £80 - £148 per week with the average cost of most halls around £100 - £115 per week.

Standard contracts in university sourced accommodation begin on either the Friday 20 September or Saturday 21 September. For contracts starting on either of these dates, students can move into their new rooms on the Friday, Saturday or Sunday of intake weekend. The length of contracts available can be either 38 weeks and one day for DMU managed halls (ending in mid June) and for private halls 42 weeks, 42 weeks and one day or 43 weeks and one day (ending in mid July).

Contracts for new overseas students will be one week longer and begin on Friday 20 September.

Different contract lengths and start dates are available for Nursing and Midwifery and Art Foundation students. We have contracts available which match your course start and finish dates.

Your confirmed room booking is a legally binding commitment to pay for the whole contract length. Many halls will ask for the first rent installment prior to arrival or if you do not have a suitable guarantor you may need to pay up to the full annual rent upfront, as well as other payments (such as booking payments/damage deposits and energy contributions) before you can move in. See tenancy agreements.

Please be aware that you won’t receive your student loan until after you have enrolled on your course. Contact our Money and Welfare team at moneyandwelfare@dmu.ac.uk| if you need advice on how to pay advance accommodation fees.

DMU does not apply late payment charges unless the debt is passed to a debt collection agent (only after a student has been sent a statement and two reminder letters), at which point a 10 per cent administrative charge will be added. Should the debt eventually be pursued through the courts, the debtor may be liable for admissible costs. Outstanding debts to private providers may incur charges.

Please be aware that it is common practice for accommodation providers in some halls of residence to charge UK, European and International students a surcharge for payment by debit or credit card. Please see information on our accepted payment methods|.
