Graduate Diploma in Computing Graduate Diploma

About the course

This course will give you the requisite skills to allow you to progress to post-graduate study in Computing. It is a mixture of English and academic skill development alongside subject study that will help you to consolidate your subject knowledge. You will be taught English and research skills by specialists in these areas with other students who are seeking to study at postgraduate level in many different subjects.

Through a broadly based programme of scholastic and English language preparation, the Graduate Diploma offers a grounding in academic content and in the key personal, conceptual and linguistic skills articulated below.

Subject specific computing modules will draw extensively on current material from appropriate sources and students will have opportunities to develop and enhance the broadest range of transferable skills so that they are able to perform effectively on a postgraduate course in Computing.

In particular, students completing the programme will have developed:

  • critical writing skills appropriate for work at Masters level.  These will include academic essay writing, reports, analyses of case studies (where appropriate), critiques of literature including the ability to assess the quality of journal articles and an awareness of the dangers of relying on single sources in making judgements;
  • advanced oral communication skills, and the opportunity to demonstrate these in both individual and group presentations;
  • effective transferable skills in problem solving, decision making and critical thinking;
  • team working and interaction skills including planning, managing priorities, managing time and negotiating;
  • an ability to analyse and synthesise information from a wide variety of sources;
  • secondary research skills including collation and analysis of data in the public domain, conducting literature reviews and drafting reports.

At the same time students will have the opportunity to consolidate their subject specific skills by studying two subject specific topics.
