In a vulnerable, uncertain, and complex world, we are striving to negotiate societal challenges while remaining within the planetary boundaries. The global challenges offer the opportunity to create a resilient, sustainable, and climate-compatible society. However, urgent and ambitious global actions are required to ensure a transition to a secure, liveable and sustainable future for all.
Complex transformations require initiatives that cut across technology, economy, behaviour, environment, and governance and developing and deploying appropriate sustainable solutions for such a global transformation remain a major challenge.
The Institute for Sustainable Futures adopts a whole system thinking approach and brings together researchers from multiple disciplines to deliver novel, applied and impactful research that brings real changes to the quality of life of our communities and societies. The institute is leveraging expertise in materials science, engineering, computing, architecture, and social and behaviour sciences at the core of its work.
Working collaboratively with communities, businesses, governments and other stakeholders, the Institute aims to co-create innovative solutions to support the development of resilient, affordable, just and sustainable systems, processes, and governance for urban and rural communities in the UK, in Europe and internationally in the developing world.
