Gifted and talented support

De Montfort University (DMU) recognises the needs and talents of the next generation and understands the particular pressures faced by schools to provide activity to challenge and develop their able, gifted and talented students.

We have developed a programme of free activity aimed at providing inspiring and challenging outreach activity which starts with a high impact event in year 10 and completes in year 12.

Our focus for the last eight years has been the creative subjects; drawing, dance, drama and music however we have also recently delivered robotics and science programmes and will be introducing new subjects in 2012/13 focussing on the professions.

An example of a typical programme:

  • Year 10: a two to four day academic programme on campus
  • Year 11: a follow up one to two day activity building on previous experiences
  • Year 12: taster sessions that include specific university entry and application information

Teachers would be asked to identify suitable students and invite them to apply via an application form. The application form includes parental consent and a personal statement from the student detailing why they wish to attend. It is the endorsement by the teacher, the confirmation of the students’ current subjects and grades, and finally the personal statement that determines the success of their application.

Further details of the 2012/13 G&T programme coming soon.
