Dare to Be Mentoring

dare-to-be-bnr

Dare to Be is a mentoring scheme open to all DMU students. It aims to improve student confidence, self-belief and motivation. At the heart of the scheme is a focus on attainment – doing well on your course, and being able to achieve what you set out to do more broadly.

Dare to Be also aims to enhance a mentor’s understanding of the issues facing our students and provide a way for the mentor to share their experiences and provide guidance to mentees. In this way, mentoring is seen to be mutually beneficial.

Dare to Be Mentoring for students

What is involved?

Students interested in becoming a mentee, will undertake training and will participate in a group mentoring activity before being matched with a suitable mentor. The mentor will be a member of DMU staff, DMU alumni, or a DMU Honorand (recipient of an honorary doctorate or degree).

Students (‘mentees’) and their mentors will negotiate a suitable pattern of engagement and will work with each other through the course of the academic year. The scheme formally closes in June 2018 at the end of the summer term.

Who can participate?

Any DMU student can apply to participate in Dare to Be mentoring.

What are the benefits?

For students, the aim of the mentoring is to achieve a stable and secure foundation for university life. From this foundation, the confidence gained will foster independent growth and a connection with others. This in turn will allow you to take steps to achieve your lifelong aspirations.

How do I take part?

As part of the application process, we ask you to think about what you would like to talk to a mentor about. This could include developing existing skills and experience, changing your approach to study or work, exploring new ideas, addressing areas you feel you are struggling in.

We would also like you to consider the type of person who would be the best mentor for you. Think about their experience, knowledge and abilities.

This will help us understand how you want to grow and progress, and enable us to best match you to a mentor.

To participate in the scheme, please complete and submit the form.
