Types of support available
New to DMU
The Disability Team hosts a three day residential course at DMU for students with autism and Asperger's expected to commence their HE studies at the end of September each year, going some way to alleviating fears that you and your parents and carers might have about you coming to University.
The residential event invites up to 25 students get involved in daily activities with 2 nights stay at Bede Halls of residence. Activities include grocery shopping and cooking an evening meal, an introduction to the library as well as free time in the city centre and involvement in social activities.
Each year is a lot of fun and feedback has been extremely positive supporting our views about its success:
“New To DMU ... was far more than just getting to know DMU, I had never stayed away from home as well as never talked to another autistic on the spectrum. The three days was a truly memorable experience, and I could not stop saying how grateful I felt just to be there…..I was walking away with a good few friends and a good few memories”.

The staff was truly lovely meeting Leanne and the staff from the disability team in personal before the big step up to university helped a lot so know I know when I am in need i know who to go to and I know they will help when they can... Brain in Hand
What is it?
Starting University can mean big changes and new experiences. De Montfort University can provide eligible students with a free licence for Brain in Hand, an assistive technology designed to help individuals with autism, mental health difficulties, SpLD’s and acquired brain injuries (not exhaustive) to achieve more.
As a DMU student, you will have the opportunity to set up your Brain in Hand with the support of your Disability Advice and Support Team or member of a mentor.
What will I need to operate the assistive technology?
Students will need a smart phone or tablet device. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you do not own one of these devices.
Benefits of Brain in Hand
Brain in Hand can help students who sometimes find it difficult to make decisions, respond to everyday problems, and self-manage their anxiety. It is also an excellent tool to improve independence, reducing anxiety, and building strategies and solutions for managing change.
