Our vision

Our vision is to become a quality assured scheme, inspiring the business community and increasing the employability of our graduates.

Employability Mentoring - Employers

Welcome to the project

The Careers and Employability Team is proud to provide Employability Mentoring, utilising the skills, knowledge and experience of industry professionals to aid the transition from DMU student to successful employee.

Mentoring a student will bring out the best in you whilst informing the career development of someone else.

What is the aim of Employability Mentoring?

The Mentoring project aims to increase the employability of our students with the help of industry mentors.

By providing a platform to develop supportive relationships, the scheme seeks to match students to those in employment who can share their expertise and improve the student’s awareness of industry work requirements and also their competitive advantage in the recruitment process.

Mentors can benefit from the project by honing their skills in communication, leadership and by learning how to bring out the best in their mentees.

How does Employability Mentoring sit within Careers?

Employability Mentoring is one of many valuable services bringing industry into contact with DMU students.

By focusing on building quality relationships between mentors and mentees, Employability Mentoring complements other initiatives offering students the best platform from which to launch their career. These opportunities include paid part-time work on campus, paid placements within industry, internships, setting up their own businesses, and promoting jobs within the local and national labour market.

Employability mentoring in partnership at DMU

Here on the project we have a variety of mentors and partnerships where we see great work undertaken every day. A recent partnership between The Leicester Business School at DMU, Bijna Dasani: a notable alumni from DMU and our Employability Mentoring Project is providing an exciting platform from which to provide a group of DMU graduates the platform to receive high quality mentoring. The short film below highlights to profile and value of mentoring in partnership.

Employer opportunities

We are recruiting mentors from a range of industries and backgrounds to form a pool of professionals with whom students can be matched as mentees. We recruit mentors who want to offer industry specific advice, as well as those who prefer to focus on the individual and their professional skills. We also have mentors that aim to do both. As a mentor, the choice is yours.

If you have specific skills that you would like to share, knowledge to impart and perspective to offer, please get in touch and let’s talk about how mentoring can be of real benefit to you and the student.

A quality assured project

In striving to provide the best service to mentors and mentees alike the project has been working towards and has now achieved a major quality assurance mark. The ‘Approved Provider Scheme’ from the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation was achieved in November 2015 following a detailed audit of our Employability Mentoring Project at De Montfort University. We are proud to have achieved this award and aim to maintain and build on the quality of our services as stated in our projects vision.
