Leicester Centre for Creative Writing
Leicester Centre for Creative Writing is a hub for creative writing in the historic city of Leicester. The centre is at one and the same time a place to study creative writing, a centre for research, and a vibrant and diverse community of writers.
What We Do
As a place to study, Leicester Centre for Creative Writing aims to develop a deep understanding of the written word, to foster an enthusiasm for literature in all its forms, and to train students in the skills that they need to make their way in the world and contribute to the greater public good.
As a centre for research, we engage in diverse, exciting and challenging research, that aims to push the boundaries of creative writing, and to explore what it means to write creatively today. Current research at the centre includes:
- fictional and anthropological explorations of the lives of Egyptian fishermen in Greece
- contemporary retellings of ancient mythology
- explorations of the relationships between literature and music
- the study of classical Chinese writing manuals
- experimental work that cuts between collage, film and the written word
As a community of writers, we work locally, nationally and internationally to build links between individuals and communities. Through events such as the States of Independence independent press fair, we are active in working to develop links between writers, publishers and audiences.
We are situated in the Clephan Building at De Montfort University, just a stone’s throw from the church in which Geoffrey Chaucer was married.
