Applied Social Sciences

Courses that we offer within social sciences combine the academic theory of University study with the practical, vocational and professional skills required to work in a number of social science areas, looking to prepare you for work in the sector.

Graduates from the School of Applied Social Sciences have been highly successful, which is due to the quality of academic expertise, student support, and dynamic teaching that we provide. Within six months of completing their course;

  • 100 per cent of Applied Criminology graduates, seeking employment or further study, are successful
  • Health Studies graduates are earning an average salary of £29, 666
  • 100 per cent of Youth and Community graduates, seeking employment or further study, are successful
  • 94.7 per cent of Working with Young People and Young Peoples Services graduates, seeking employment or further study, are successful*

The School prides itself on its ability to build upon and develop its relationships with key stakeholders locally, regionally, nationally and internationally through work with the criminal justice, social work and social care sectors, youth and community agencies, and Professional Statutory Regulatory Bodies.

Our dynamic teaching means that industry experts directly influence how and what we teach and often deliver lectures.


Partnerships and research:

Our international partnerships aim to make a difference to global communities, with specific research and collaborations in Japan, Sri Lanka, the Caribbean, South Africa, the Gambia and the EU.

The school is involved in work such as;

  • The effects of Asthma on ethnic minority children in the UK, in collaboration with Charity Asthma UK
  • HIV AIDS and young people in South Africa
  • Internationalisation of youth work in the Gambia
  • Issues in the youth labour market and youth training in Japan, in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy and Makoto Yuasa, policy adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan, Naoto Kan
  • Implementation of Probation rules and a probation training curriculum in Europe
  • Developing the social work profession and training in former Soviet Union countries
  • Empowering carers of elderly or sick people in Europe

Placements and Courses

Placements are an integral part of our courses. Our dedicated Work-Based Learning Unit| is there to help you find mandatory and voluntary sandwich placements.

Placements in Social Work|, and Youth and Community Studies| are facilitated by close liaison with city centre councils in Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough.

They have included work with:

  • Age Concern and LOROS
  • The Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice
