Business and Law students were praised for top performances during their studies as a special presentation was held at Leicester Castle Business School.
The De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) venue was packed with proud families, friends and lecturers as well as representatives from several corporate sponsors of the awards, including the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) which was the overall sponsor.
Professor Dana Brown, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean, Faculty of Business and Law, said the prize giving was an important recognition of the hard work and commitment that many students had made, often combining their studies with full-time roles.
She said: “We are proud of the achievements of all our graduates, but we wish to celebrate in particular those who have contributed in a special way to the faculty through their academic excellence and citizenship.
“We are blessed with wonderful students here at De Montfort and it is always difficult to select winners from the wealth of talent among our graduates. Hence these prizes are made in recognition of outstanding achievement and success.”
The work of postgraduate students on business courses was celebrated with Professor Alasdair Blair, Associate Dean in the Faculty of Business and Law. He told graduates: “You should all be very proud of your achievements and we are certainly proud of you. We wish you every success.”
Chris Potter,
MSc Strategic and Digital Marketing, has started work for Leicestershire and Rutland Sport, based at Loughborough University. He said: “It’s my dream job. I love sport and I love marketing, and so far it has been a great place to work. It feels odd to leave DMU because I did my undergraduate degree here and then went straight to a Master’s, but it’s given me the skills to walk into a great job.”
Lucy Burns has also landed a role working with Challis Marketing in Leicester, a B2B digital marketing company. She said: “I started working there in November and I’m loving it. My studies in digital marketing got me the role because my boss was looking for someone who had a lot of knowledge about the latest theories and strategies and she was looking for someone who could bring that to the company.”
Many students combined work with studying for a Master’s such as Warren Luyt, winner of the best student performance on
MSc Project Management and Best Dissertation.
He said: “I studied while working part-time at Leicester Royal Infirmary. I’ve enjoyed it very much and managed to negotiate a flexible work schedule and complete assignments. It’s a full-on course and challenging but I have learned a great deal.”
Leicester De Montfort Law School enjoys close links with law firms throughout the Midlands and representatives from several companies were on hand to congratulate the students and present awards.
Freeths, Irwin Mitchell, Nelsons, CILEx Law School, Shakespeare Martineau, Gateley and Weightmans were among the companies who came along to congratulate the law students of 2018.
Adam Willson won the best performance in private client elective, sponsored by Shakespeare Martineau. He combined his LPC, which is the training needed to become a solicitor, with full-time work as a paralegal for Wilson Browne solicitors which have branches in Northampton, Kettering, Leicester and Wellingborough. He said: “The potential is there for going forward in my career now.”
Jennifer Batten, who was named best student on the Graduate Diploma in Law course, combined studies with her day job in Norfolk County Council’s legal team. She said: “I’ve enjoyed it, and to get the award and the degree today is great.”
Nazneen Karim won the Leicestershire Law Society prize for the best student on the Legal Practice Course (full time) Stage Two. She is now expecting her second child but plans to specialise in family law after maternity leave. She said: “It’s been a great experience. You get so much support, mentoring and there’s a real focus on employability at DMU.”
Isobel Wooffitt has landed a training contract with a law firm in Essex, specialising in personal injury and negligence claims. “I’m so looking forward to getting my evenings, weekends and life back!,” she laughed. “I was a paralegal and worked during the day as well as studied. It’s been a lot of work but it’s so worth it and there’s lots of support.”
Jessica Chapman, who is part of the legal team for house builder Barratts, in Coalville, won the Irwin Mitchell prize for best student on the Legal Practice Course (part time). She said: “It’s a huge opportunity to develop professionally and I’m looking forward to widening my role.”
