Students can find their path at Steer Your Career Conference

Students at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) will have the chance to explore their career opportunities thanks to a conference being held by De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU).

The ‘Steer Your Career Conference’ will be held at Campus Centre between 10am-3pm on Wednesday 25 April and will be free to attend for DMU students.

Aimed at students from all year groups as well as postgraduate and PhD students, the event will give an insight into life after university and offer advice on what to do next.

The sessions will feature industry experts and will provide advice on recruitment skills such as application forms and psychometric tests. There will be a keynote session delivered by Mike Grey from the sector-leading graduate recruitment specialists Gradconsult.

The conference is organised by Mollie Footitt, DP Education at DSU, who believes that it will address a vitally important issue for students.

She explained: “Steer Your Career is something that I’ve been planning all year to show that there isn’t just one path to a successful career in the future.

“Everyone has different skills and routes to take, and it’s important to know everything that’s available to you and to make sure you’re doing something that you enjoy.”

The event will be split into three work streams, covering further study, private sector work and third sector work.

Mollie added: “There are three work streams throughout the day. One of them is getting involved with further studies – whether that is a master’s or PhD – to continue your education, including how to write a successful application and the different styles of learning.

“There’s also a section for general business and private sector work, how to write an application and what to look for as well as psychometric testing, and then a final work stream on the ‘third sector’ and all about working for charities and public-sector organisations.

“I know from personal experience it can be really difficult to decide on which route to take. There can be so many things to consider, and this day will help put some of those worries to rest for people.”

DMU has recently launched #DMUworks, which is the university’s ambitious programme to provide brand new professional opportunities ensuring students are work-ready in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to find out more about this exciting programme during the day.
