An informative series of talks and workshops about pursuing a career in cyber security will be hosted at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) during #DMUCyberWeek (Monday 8 – Friday 12 May).
Students will have the chance to explore pertinent topics including pentesting (simulated attacks on computer systems to spot security weaknesses), honeypots (computer security mechanisms set to detect and deflect unauthorised use of data) and social engineering.
They will also benefit from talks and Q&A sessions led by professionals representing leading companies such as Airbus, Deloitte and National Grid.
Organised by DMU's Cyber Technology Institute (CTI), #DMUCyberWeek is also an opportunity for local businesses and security enthusiasts to learn more about the research and commercial engagement happening in the CTI.
A networking event on Tuesday 9 May will bring academic experts, students, industry speakers and other visitors together to explore common interests in the field of cyber security.
Final-year Forensic Computing student Kyle Coffey said: “#DMUCyberWeek is a fantastic opportunity for students. It gives us exposure to external cyber security specialists and a chance to test our own skills.”
Guest speaker Rae McClelland, from Cyber Security Challenge UK, said: “We are pleased to be supporting #DMUCyberWeek, hosting an exclusive cyber security careers day on Monday 8 May, delivered with our industry partners including National Grid, CREST and the National Crime Agency.
“Attendees will be given an opportunity to learn about typical roles in the industry and understand what a career in cyber security could mean for them.
“We are excited to kick off what looks to be a great week of cyber security activities and hope to see lots of students throughout the day.”
Dr Richard Smith, an Associate Professor in Cyber Security at DMU’s CTI, said: “We are delighted to bring our students together with our industry collaborators as part of #DMUCyberWeek.
“This programme of activities offers the opportunity to expose our students to the real-world challenges in the cyber security domain; as well as to raise the profile of our own state-of-the-art research here at the CTI.”
