Graduations came to a stylish end today as hundreds of students from the School of Design and Leicester School of Architecture became graduates of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).
Cheers and applause echoed around The Venue@DMU as students from the School of Design and the Leicester School of Architecture walked across the stage to collect their degrees.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard presided over the ceremonies and urged the audience to make their cheers “the loudest yet”.
He added: “I am so proud to be here with you today to celebrate this immense achievement.”
“It’s been an amazing, I’ve really enjoyed my time here,” said Amber Cousins, who graduated in Fashion, Textiles and Accessories. “Being in the new Vijay Patel building has been great and the course allows you to specialise in different fabrics so I have found a love of print and pattern making.”
Fashion Textiles and Accessories graduate Jirisuda Jeensanthia, from Thailand, said: “What’s the best bit? It has been everything – my friends, the teachers and Leicester.”
Footwear Design graduate Joanne Eden, who won a prize from the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers during her time at DMU, is set to start a job in London with brand Soho Shoes. She said: “I’ve got a month before I start to relax but I’m off to celebrate now!”
Design Crafts graduate Angie Packer discovered a new passion and a new business thanks to her studies. She is now taking commissions and has set up her company, Angie Packer Designer Maker making bespoke glassware.
She said: “Glass was a complete surprise, I thought I would be working in metals. I think it’s because you can do anything with it. There’s a whole world of possibilities out there that I’ve not even touched yet.

Take a virtual tour of DMU without leaving your laptopAngie, who won the Duncan Henderson Scholarship-Therea Taylor Memorial Award, had this advice for arts students: “Just got for it! Enjoy every moment, be part of the studio culture and enjoy every minute.”
Architecture graduate Gema Dimaityte was celebrating and then catching a 3am flight to Greece, to spend the summer with friends. "That's how we celebrate graduations!" she laughed. "Then I'm studying further and trying to find a placement."
"It was fantastic ceremony, the gospel choir were particularly good - the main singer was unbelievable," said Jacob Paisley,
Product Design. "The highlight has been the new building. I've really enjoyed being in there."
DMU’s Alumni team had set up a memory tree in the Graduation Village where people could record their favourite time at DMU.
“My favourite moment has been meeting the most amazing people,” wrote
Computer Games Programming student Ben Felstead.
Forensic Science student Lauren Jayne added: “University has been the best experience, especially joining DMU Hockey.”
